Buccella, Victor
Buccella, Victor
December 23, 1961 - June 28, 2026Our hearts are broken.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Victor Buccella on Sunday, June 28, 2026, with his loving wife and son by his side, in his 64th year.
Victor was born on December 23, 1961, in Alanno, Pescara, Italy, to Gabriele and Luigina Buccella. In 1966, the family immigrated to Canada with Victor and his sister, Mary, where they built a life rooted in hard work, family, and community.
Victor's lifelong passion for the culinary world began at a young age, washing dishes in local restaurants. His determination and talent soon led him further where he honed his skills at the stove before eventually finding his true calling in the front of the house bringing together exceptional food and genuine hospitality. Throughout his career, Victor shared his talents with many well-known establishments across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including Frank Vetere's in the late 1970s, Maxwell's, Lo Presti's, Chicken Roost, Max Mince Catering, and Queen's Park where he proudly served dignitaries.
In 1994, Victor fulfilled his dream by opening The Purple Pear in Hamilton. It quickly became more than a restaurant—it became a gathering place where lifelong memories were made. Whether celebrating engagements, weddings, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, family gatherings, date nights, or weekly traditions, Victor took great pride in making every occasion special. He welcomed every guest as though they were family, and in many ways, they became just that.
Known for his quiet nature, thoughtful presence, quick wit, and gentle sense of humour, Victor had an extraordinary gift for remembering people. He knew your name, your favourite wine, your preferred meal, your likes and dislikes, and even "your table." Nothing escaped his attention. His kindness, generosity, and genuine care for others touched countless lives, and his legacy will live on through the many friendships and extended family he created over the years.
Victor leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 27 years, Debra (Finnessy), and his son, Christopher, of whom he was immensely proud. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Angelo) Tesone; brothers-in-law John (Sandi) Finnessy, Greg (Nancy) Finnessy, and Griff Bell; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends throughout Canada, the United States, and Italy.
Victor was predeceased by his parents, Gabriele and Luigina Buccella; parents-in-law, John J. and Elizabeth Finnessy; sister-in-law, Nancy Bell; and niece Kathryn “Katie” Finnessy Proud.
In accordance with Victor's wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no formal service. Rather than a gathering, he would ask that you listen to good music, keep a smile on your face, enjoy the people you love, and savour life—one bite at a time.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional staff at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Hamilton General Hospital, and the St. Peter's Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Victor throughout his journey. We are truly fortunate to live in a community blessed with such dedicated healthcare professionals who bring comfort and light during life's most difficult moments.
