At Passages, we are pleased to offer families a variety of burial choices, including simple / direct burial and natural (green) burial.

Green Burial?
As more and more Canadians consider their environmental footprint, it’s only natural that we turn those considerations to how we will make our final arrangements.

An eco-friendly alternative to cremation, natural burial (also known as green burial) simply refers to the return of a body to the earth with as minimal an impact on the environment as possible. It’s a practice that dates back thousands of years, and as more families learn about the options available to them, we’re happy to say is once again growing here in Ontario.

For those considering Natural Burial, these are the key tenets:

  • The body is not embalmed

  • The body is placed in either a natural, biodegradable casket or shroud

  • The casket or shroud is placed directly into the earth without a concrete liner or vault

  • The site is left to its natural indigenous state vs. being landscaped

With the growing interest in natural burial, more and more cemeteries are dedicating spaces for this type of service. And with the exceptional efforts of the Green Burial Society of Canada and the Natural Burial Association, there’s a strong movement toward growth in dedicated natural burial cemeteries.

About Green Burials

A Natural Burial emphasizes simplicity by returning the body to the Earth with as little impact on the environment as possible.

For those who are mindful of the cyclical nature of life, Natural Burial can be a spiritually fulfilling alternative to conventional burial or cremation.

The 5 Guiding Principles of a Natural Burial:

  1. No Embalming

The process of embalming uses highly toxic chemicals to temporarily preserve the deceased for viewing. Instead, refrigeration and the topical application of environmentally sensitive soaps, lotions and disinfecting agents allow for a dignified viewing and service of remembrance.

2. A Biodegradable Casket or Shroud

The deceased is wrapped in a shroud of natural, biodegradable fibres in preparation for direct Earth burial. Or for viewings, they can be dressed in natural fibre clothing and placed into a casket or container which is also made of sustainable (and ideally locally sourced) biodegradable materials.

3. Direct Earth Burial

The deceased is returned to the Earth naturally. (Flame-based cremation is not considered a green form of disposition.)

4. No Vault

The casket or shroud is laid to rest directly into the Earth without a concrete or metal vault or liner.

5. Restoration of the Natural Environment

Traditional headstones and individual monuments are replaced with natural landscaping. Flat rocks, plants, trees and GPS coordinates are used as markers which protects and preserves the indigenous eco system.

Green Cemeteries in Ontario

In Canada, we have 3 kinds of cemeteries for Green Burial:

  1. Dedicated Green Cemeteries that strictly adhere to the 5 guiding principles and only practice green burial or the interment of eco-friendly urns.

  2. Hybrid Cemeteries are more common. They are traditional cemeteries that offer green burial in designated spaces. These spaces are set apart from the rest of the cemetery and follow the same guiding principles for green or natural burial.

  3. Green-Friendly Cemeteries are cemeteries that don’t offer a dedicated green burial section, but want to provide environmentally friendly options such as burial shroud or pine caskets without vault or embalming.
