Thompson, Mary

Thompson, Mary Stewart
May 15, 1931 - July 3, 2026

Mary Stewart Thompson (nee Copland) was born in Ardrossan Ayrshire Scotland on May 15 1931. She died in Guelph Ontario on July 3 2026, aged 95. She died peacefully at her care home with her son Andrew by her side.

She is survived by her three children, Andrew (Lorna), Elaine (John), and Ian (Jane) plus grandchildren Jaqueline (Sean), John (Devon), Stuart and William (Olivia). And three great-granddaughters, Leora, Eleanor and Evelyne.

Mary worked for the Etobicoke Board of Education at North Albion, West Humber, and Richview Collegiate, as head secretary to the High School Principal and the Librarian from 1965 to 1990.

Mary’s interests included Scottish Country dancing, Ballroom dancing, knitting and embroidery. She and her husband John enjoyed cruising on Holland America and holidaying in Hawaii. She threw wonderful parties at New Years Eve and on Rabbie Burns’ Night. She loved living in The Granary, near the lake in old Oakville where she did volunteer work at Gairloch galleries.

She never lost her Scottish accent and was as elegant in the way she dressed as the way she lived. Despite having no health issues, (due to the healthy Scottish diet?) she struggled with dementia in her latter years. She was a wonderful mother and will be sorely missed.
