Barnes, Shirley
Barnes, Shirley Valentine
September 28, 1936 - February 4, 2026Shirley Valentine Barnes (née Raaff), aged 89, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026 with her daughters at her side, at Royal Terrace in Palmerston, Ontario.
Born on September 28, 1936, in Caledon, South Africa, Shirley enjoyed a happy childhood with a loving family. Through their inspiration and role modelling, Shirley grew up to be an energetic, compassionate, determined, hardworking and generous woman who was devoted to her family. She had a long and fulfilling career as a nurse to complex and palliative care patients. Shirley devoted herself wholeheartedly to the well-being of those in her care, consistently going above and beyond to ensure they received not only medical attention but also the kindness and dignity they deserved. Shirley enjoyed being 'team lead' and was admired and respected by both her colleagues and those in her care. She continued nursing until the remarkable age of 77, finding deep fulfillment in every moment of her vocation.
Shirley’s vibrant spirit extended far beyond her professional life. She was fun-loving and always ready for an adventure! She believed deeply in the importance of balancing hard work with joy and adventure. She taught her daughters to work hard and to have fun, always encouraging them to pursue their goals while celebrating life’s joys.
She enjoyed travelling with both her husband and other family members. She delighted in picking winning horses at the racetrack, playing the slots, walks with the family’s many beloved dogs, spending time with family and friends and watching “Dancing with the Stars” and "Deal or No Deal".
Shirley is lovingly remembered by her daughters Jennifer and Anita; grandchildren Marina and Thomas; sister Marina; brother Neville; as well as many extended family members across South Africa, Canada, and Australia.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Basil, by her brothers Valentine and Ernie and by her sisters Nancy and Beartha.
Our gratitude and recognition go out to Dr. Christopher Kitamura from Baycrest who was devoted to her well-being and to the incredible staff at Royal Terrace in Palmerston, Ontario. During her final two years, the staff at Royal Terrace ensured that Shirley was lovingly cared for and actively engaged. As well, they patiently dealt with Shirley's 'helicopter daughters'! Thank you for your compassion, devotion, energy and patience.
A celebration of life will be held in spring. In lieu of flowers, be kind to someone in need.
