DONALD “BUTCH” ROBERT MUNN
January 21, 1941 – April 8, 2026It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald “Butch” Munn on April 8, 2026, in his 85th year. Surrounded by his family’s love, he had all of his daughters by his side honouring his end of life journey, Kimberly Munn; Susan (& John McClure); Michele Munn; Patricia (& Stephen Guest); and Sharon Munn (& Bret Rodgers).
He was a proud and devoted Poppa to Bradley (& Cheryl Denholm); Meagan McClure (& Zee Bartos); Lauren McClure; Brandon Guest (& Amelia Caza); Julia Guest (& Colin Shea); Matthew McClure; Colton Guest; and Tala Rodgers. Cherished Great-Poppa to Madelyn Bartos, Jameson McClure, Mackenzie Bartos, Kennedy McClure, and Jackson Bartos.
Butch will be dearly missed by his brother Dennis (& Gloria Munn), as well as his nephew Jason Munn and niece Hilary Munn and her family. He was predeceased by his parents, Ivan and Gladys Munn.
Born and raised in Hamilton on January 21, 1941, Butch was a graduate of Delta S.S. and he began his career as a millwright at Stelco. Butch attained membership in I.A.T.S.E. Local 129 on December 12, 1965, and was a long standing member until retirement in June 2008. With the opening of Hamilton Place, Butch worked stage calls proudly along side of his father, before taking on the position of House Carpenter. Over more than 40 years of dedicated service, Butch worked behind the scenes on countless productions—musicals, operas, and concerts—bringing his knowledge, skill, and care to every show. During his time with Local 129, he also served in various leadership roles, including Business Agent, Secretary, and President. His passion for theatre and commitment to the union were evident throughout his career and many union negotiations.
Butch loved spending time with his family and friends, always welcoming a good conversation over a coffee and an old-fashioned plain. Sharing a story with Butch meant it was shared with the rest of the family soon thereafter, as he was the family’s pipeline of information.
He shared his love of camping with his daughters, over the years at Theona Lodge, east coast camping, amongst many provincial parks. Throughout the years, his passion for travel took him to many memorable places, at which lasting memories were made and fondly recounted to all. British Columbia, Portugal and Italy were amongst the stories most frequently shared.
As an avid reader, known for reading three newspapers a day, Butch was always well-informed and eager to share thoughtful advice on just about any subject with his family. He will be remembered for his steady presence, quiet wisdom, and warm sense of humour.
While a devoted fan for the Blue Jays games, time would also be spent watching the Leafs. However, he often found himself cheering when the opposing team scored. During the football season, Saturday mornings were spent reviewing the SUN’s sports section to make team pick selections for football pools, in the hopes of collecting big winnings.
Butch will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, strength, and guidance will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks for the compassion and care provided by the Shalom Village team on the 2nd Floor at SV2.
Cremation has taken place. Butch will be honoured with a Celebration of Life this summer, followed by a private interment. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SickKids GIFT Program Fund in memory of Donald Munn are gratefully welcomed.
