Cockburn, Elizabeth

Cockburn, Elizabeth Anne Wildman
November 18, 1934 – December 14, 2025

Born November 18, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Victor and Vera (Clute) Wildman, Elizabeth died peacefully at home in Hamilton on December 14, 2025, family at her side.

Predeceased by her husband Perry Cockburn and her brother Edward Wildman, Elizabeth leaves behind her beloved sister Frances Tieleman. She will also be missed by her daughters Lynn, Susan, and Frances and son-in-law, Charles Meanwell. “Grandzabby” was delighted by and extremely proud of her grandchildren and her great-grandchild. “Aunt Betsy” will be fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was also “Betsy” or “Liz” to so many friends who will miss her deeply.

Elizabeth lived a life of adventure, curiosity, learning, and connection. With a passion for education and for training teachers, she earned a Doctorate in Education at the age of 60 from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.

Elizabeth shared her love of music with others, through teaching, singing and dancing with children, and joyfully playing piano duets with her father and sister.

Her spirit was loving, generous and kind. She developed and nurtured strong bonds and friendships over many years working in Canada, Cameroon and India.

She was active in Unitarian Universalism and the Rural Learning Association, and had great respect and appreciation for Indigenous ways. Her commitment to social justice, human rights and caring for nature and the earth were essential parts of who she was.

You’re invited to join us in Hamilton for a celebration of Elizabeth’s life in the spring. Please consider a donation to Indspire.ca in lieu of flowers.
