Campbell, John Roy
July 2, 1935 - January 15, 2026

The family of John Roy Campbell is sad to announce his passing at Hospice Wellington on Thursday January 15th 2026.

John leaves behind Aileen, his beloved wife of 65 years, his children Colin and his wife Guiomar and Allyson and her husband Jeff. John was much loved by his grandchildren Luanna and Adriano Campbell and Kaitlin and Zachary Ulmer.

John was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1935. He graduated from Glasgow University in 1960, and emigrated to Canada soon after, being joined in Toronto by Aileen shortly after. They returned to Scotland to be married in April of 1961 and then started their married life in Toronto.

John worked at Manulife Financial from his arrival in Canada to his retirement, moving to the Waterloo office in 1986, when he and Aileen settled in Puslinch. John qualified as an Actuary but the arrival of computers to the company changed his career direction and he worked in the data processing area, his final project being the successful management of the Y2K project.

 After John retired he and Aileen moved to Guelph where John spent busy retirement years taking courses at University of Guelph and studying history and French. He was a keen gardener and spent many happy hours digging and planting.

John and Aileen purchased a cottage in 1975 and they spent many happy summers in his ”little piece of heaven in the Canadian Shield.” John and Aileen also enjoyed wonderful trips in his retirement years, to many European countries and farther afield to Australia and New Zealand and South America.

But perhaps John’s greatest pleasure was the hours he spent running with the guys at the Waterloo Y and with Guelph groups after his retirement. He ran 42 marathons over his running career including the Boston Marathon 3 times. He love the training and the friendships he made and often was accompanied by Aileen to interesting cities in Canada and the United States.

John celebrated his 90th birthday in his lovely garden in Guelph in July, and died peacefully a few months later with no regrets.

In accordance with John’s wishes there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. Donations in memory to Hospice Wellington or Guelph Symphony Orchestra are appreciated.

“If there’s another world, he lives in bliss;

 If there is none, he made the best of this.”
