Robinson, James

Robinson, James Gilbert
September 10, 1952 – November 14, 2025

With heavy but full hearts and deep gratitude for a life richly lived, the family of James Gilbert “Jim” Robinson, known to many as “Skid”, announces his peaceful passing on Friday, November 14, 2025, at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Waterloo. He was 73.

Jim is survived by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Sandy Robinson (nee Jacobs); their twin daughters Heather Gronek (Tom) and Kimberley Koolen (Mike); and his treasured grandchildren Theo, Robyn, Jasper, and Fiona. He also leaves behind his brother Dave “Rabbi” Robinson and many dear cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Mildred “Midge” and Dale Robinson, and his youngest brother Doug “Peanut” Robinson.

Born in Val-d’Or, Quebec, Jim grew up in Timmins and Sault Ste. Marie before settling in Sudbury, Ontario, where he built a long and respected career in Metals Accounting at Inco (later Vale). In Sudbury, he met Sandy, raised their family, and embraced early retirement at 48, not out of weariness, but because he had goals and dreams yet to fulfill.

A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Jim logged hundreds of thousands of miles across North America with Sandy riding pillion, collecting memories, friendships, and many on the road stories (just ask his family). He was dubbed “Skid” after a youthful bump with a parked car, a nickname that stuck throughout his adult life thanks to his easy humour and good nature.

Curious and courageous, Jim embraced life fully, whether exploring new technology, advocating for snowmobiling safety while also enjoying many trails, golfing, seeking the occasional thrill, or quietly supporting his family, and community with involvement in activities, groups, and organizations too numerous to mention. Always ready to help where needed, he gave freely of his time and care, believing that showing up for others was simply part of a good life. Above all, he was about people: connecting easily, listening deeply, and offering wisdom without judgment. To his family, he was a steady anchor, always ready with a story, an adventure, gentle guidance, or simply his presence, a presence that touched countless lives near and far.

In 2020, Jim and Sandy moved to Waterloo to be nearer to their daughters and their grandchildren. There Jim found joy in model railroading with the Waterloo Region Model Railway Club, among a number of other volunteer and leisure pursuits. We’d be remiss if we left out the pleasure he found in simply watching his favourite TV shows and movies, with Sandy by his side.

On his final day, he shared one regret: not being able to say goodbye to everyone he wished to. So we say it for him: thank you for the ride, the laughter and good times, the conversations, and the love.

In keeping with his wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Waterloo Region Health Network, to another charity of choice and/or by giving blood, an act Jim championed as an award-recognized donor with Canadian Blood Services.

Skid, may your final ride be smooth, and the road ahead wide and open. Until we see you again. LHR.
