Timmerman, Jan

TIMMERMAN, Jan David
April 20, 1947 – October 4, 2026

Jan David Timmerman passed away on October 4, 2026, in Guelph, Ontario, at the age of 79.

Jan was born in Hamburg, Germany, on April 20, 1947, to John and Alice Timmerman. He was raised in Germany, Kenya and Canada. As a young man, he was an accomplished athlete, until knee injuries from basketball forced him to settle down.

Jan became an elementary school teacher, and met the love of his life, Lynda, in Ottawa, Ontario. He raised his family in Orleans, Ontario, where he also gave his time to the community through the Lions Club.

In retirement, Jan moved to Lake Weslemkoon in Gilmour, Ontario, where he continued to serve his community through Community Care, Cancer Society and the Census . He loved taking people out on his boat for tours of the lake, fishing, swimming and collecting blueberries. He and his wife, Lynda, also loved to travel, and together they saw the world.

Jan was an avid artist who painted in oils and acrylics. He also loved woodworking and a good game of cards.

When his health turned, Jan moved to The Village by the Arboretum in Guelph to be closer to family and medical care. There he enjoyed playing Bridge and kept helping others by sponsoring people in AA.

Jan is survived by his devoted wife, Lynda; his brother and best friend, Derek; his children, Mike (Andy), Dena, and Jay (Suki); and his grandchildren, Everett, Anouk, Ivy-Lynn, and Rowan, who gave him the only nickname that ever stuck: Grumpa.

Per Jan's wishes, there will be no service or visitation. He will be cremated and laid to rest with family in Wainfleet, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jan's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
